Michael Bedford is an emerging oil painter living in Toronto, Canada.
His paintings explore figuration through a modern, queer lens. He uses quick, expressive brushstrokes, focusing primarily on the physicality of the paint as well as capturing the duality of light and shadow.
Having studied neuroscience and psychology before becoming a painter, he’s endlessly fascinated with the human psyche, including how we live in relation with others, as well as with our selves.
"As technology advances, we find ourselves less and less in touch with what fundamentally makes us human and connects us, both to the earth and to each other. I think this has some important consequences that are worth thinking about."
His most recent work explore themes of isolation, queerness, and the Jungian shadow, and ask - how is it that the promise of a more connected world has left many of us feeling more alone than ever?
